I have an RV - in fact, I've had two. The first time I ever set foot in an RV was the day that my wife 's uncle gave us his old jalopy, about four years ago. I never camped or was a boy scout growing up, I was kind of thrust into the outdoor lifestyle.
Recently, I loaned my RV to a couple of friends and one of them said to me, "Now I understand the allure". So, what is the allure and why do I love my RV.
1) I trod where most people fear to go. Most people are intimidated by a RV, either for the perceived social stigma or the fear of driving one of those 36 foot mosters. For my friends, it is mostly the social stigma, IMHO. It is very easy to drive - my wife drives it just fine as well.
2) It required me to change and be different - change, where I go, when I go, how I go. Change is tough, no matter how small and I like to be someone who embraces change.
3) It requires some work. We have met other families in S. Florida for Spring break. They hop a plane and are there is a few hours. We hop in the RV and arrive in 2 days.
4) It is less expensive.Than what, you might say? It's the cheapest vacation home you can own. Since there are six people in my family, the cost of gas is always cheaper than flights, now matter how far we have to drive.
5) We are mobile. When we go on vacation, whether staying in hotel or camp site, we have ultimate flexibility. We can see different sities and If we don't like the scene, we move down the road.
6) It gives the family yet another venue in which to not-get-along. We hone our inter-family-warfare skills in yet another setting.
I have offered my RV to several of our very good friends - so far, in four years, one has taken us up on the offer, despite the fact that everyone - and, I mean, everyone - says, "I've always wanted to take a family trip in an RV". Go figure.
